Craigs

Court Tomb AKA The Broadstone

The Court Tomb at Craigs is situated on the western slopes of a ridge known as Long Mountain. As we approached the monument I immediately thought of the portal tomb at Ballykeel in County Armagh, it is very similar in appearance to a tripod dolmen. Like the monument at Ballykeel part of this tomb was reconstructed. The large capstone was placed over the first chamber in the mid-19th century and may not be original. The remains of the tomb can be quite confusing, so a small description may help. The court tomb is aligned NNW-SSE, with a semi-circular court at the southern end. There is an entrance, to a three chambered gallery, between two large portal slabs. The gallery was divided by jambs and sill stones. The tomb is set in a small oval cairn, some of the kerb stones still remain.

Taken from the third chamber looking south over the gallery toward the court.

Standing in the court looking at the facade, with the gallery entrance beneath the capstone.

Situated: About 350 metres north of Craigs passage tomb take a right turn up a farm track. The tomb is in the field to your right about 300 metres up the track.
